Unlocking Lifestyle Factors That Add Years to Our Lives
The prospect of eternal youth and longevity has intrigued humanity for centuries. Today's fascination with anti-aging has ballooned into a massive, multi-billion dollar industry. But while many perceive human lifespan to be increasing, the rise in chronic diseases suggests we should focus more on living healthier for longer and improve our health span - or healthy life expectancy.
A four-part Netflix documentary "The Blue Zones" explores certain regions called "blue zones" where many residents live to 100 while maintaining remarkable health. Journalist Dan Buettner explores longevity hotspots like Okinawa, Japan, Sardinia, Italy, Loma Linda, California, Ikaria, Greece, Nicoya, Costa Rica, and Singapore.
So what makes these cities conducive to good health and longevity? Blue zone inhabitants share certain lifestyle habits that contribute to their vitality into old age, like being part of a close community, having a life purpose, eating foods grown from the soil, staying physically active, and keeping stress low. Genetics also play a role, but studies have shown that lifestyle factors have a bigger impact on longevity.
Each blue zone has different culinary practices. But they all had one thing in common. They ate mostly plants. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, lentils, and whole grains were featured heavily. These traditional diets provide nutrients that protect against chronic diseases plaguing Western lifestyles. Residents tend to eat meat and fish in moderation. They also consume olive oil, wine, and tea. They avoid ultra-processed and fast foods and practice moderate caloric restriction. Eating only until 80% full and preparing fresh meals at home are other common threads.
While genetics influence longevity to some degree, adopting lifestyle habits centered around real, minimally processed foods may allow us to live not only longer but healthier. The habits and routines of these residents offer insight into achieving a long, vibrant life relatively free of disease. So while adding years to our life spans may be appealing, the ultimate goal should be preserving health and vitality as we age.
Best of health,
Will
