Can 15 minutes of activity reduce the dangers of prolonged sitting

A study published in the journal JAMA Network Open, observed approximately 480,000 participants over a 13 year period. The study revealed that individuals who spent a significant portion of their day sitting had a 16% higher risk of overall mortality and a 34% higher risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease compared to those with less sedentary occupations. In addition, those who predominantly sat at work but added 15 to 30 minutes of physical activity experienced similar mortality rates to sedentary individuals who spent less time sitting during the day.

Chairs with a backrest and legs have been around since the Early Dynastic Period - 3100 B.C. In ancient Egypt the use of chairs was reserved for the wealthiest and most powerful members of royalty and nobility. Colossal statues of pharaohs sitting in thrones with straight backs and hips, knees, and ankles in a 90 degree position can still be found in Egypt and museums.

Today, chairs can be found almost anywhere. It may seem strange to not find them. They're in our homes, public spaces, vehicles, etc. They've become permanent fixtures in the work culture of industrialized countries. Prolonged sitting has been called the "new cancer" and has become normal in a growing society of unhealthy people.

The findings in the recent study underscore the importance of addressing sedentary lifestyles to improve overall health outcomes. Public health efforts should emphasize breaking up extended periods of sitting and encourage regular forms of movement into daily routines. Simple lifestyle changes like taking short walking or stretching breaks during work hours or exercising after work can make a big difference. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator can also prove beneficial to counteract the negative impacts of prolonged sitting. Sitting for too long is a health hazard. It's vital for people to be mindful of how much time they spend in the seated position and aim for more activity in order to maintain health.
